Turkish Cities


There are a great number of Turkish cities as Turkey has 81 provinces in total and all of these have one or more city. One of the main reasons that this country is so popular with tourists is that all of these provinces and cities have something different to offer that makes them unique. Some of the main cities to see are Istanbul, which is often described as the heart of Turkey, and Ankara which is the capital city. Another popular city with tourists and locals is Antalya which for this reason is often referred to as the touristic capital of Turkey. Istanbul, or Constantinople as it was once known, was made famous by crusaders and for this reason holds a lot of splendour and history. It is surrounded by the Marmara Sea and the Black Sea and was once an incredibly important port. The city is split into two by the Bosphorus and this is also the only alternative to reach the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.

If you want to really experience Turkish cities such as Istanbul then you will need to spend some time there and walk the streets to get a real feel for the area. Istanbul for example holds a vast amount of history and has a culture full of amazing stories and artefacts that are well worth a visit. Ankara is the capital of modern Turkey and is another one of the popular tourist areas. This city lies in the centre of Anatolia on the eastern range of the high Anatolian plateau. Ankara has a rich historical past and has been under the rule of the Romans and Byzantines to name a few. The Ottomans first gained control of the city in 1402 A.D. and retained control right up until the First World War. Ankara next became important when Kemal Ataturk chose this city as the base to lead the War of Liberation. In 1923 Ankara was named as the capital city of the new Turkish Republic due to its history.

Another great area to visit when you are in Turkey is the Antalya region. There is a vast amount of beauty, character and historical wealth here which is sure to have something to interest everyone. This area has a more Mediterranean feel due to the landscape and climate. Often referred to as the Turkish Riviera there is a great deal of archaeological importance which provides this area with much to see and do.
